Pine Forest | Jacksonville, Florida
Constructed in 1948, the existing 7,000 s.f. library fronts on Hendricks Avenue in the historic San Marco area of Jacksonville. The existing building, designed in the "Prairie Style", is clad in stone veneer and stucco. The roof is flat with deep overhangs. The project consists of the remodeling of the existing library and the addition of 4,500 square feet for stacks, reading area and staff offices. Also included is a new 6,000 s.f. community center which is connected to the library by an entry vestibule and public toilets. The new entry to the complex has been shifted toward the center of the building, off the side street, with parking to the rear. The new addition is designed in the same style with matching materials to complement the original building. Elevated roofs and clerestory glass form a gallery in the library to define circulation and provide natural lighting to the indoor play area in the community center.
