New Model Apartments Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind St. Augustine, Florida
The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind has experienced rapid growth in the past decade. To respond to this growth, the school has provided independent living housing units south of the existing campus. These four units will house twelve hearing and/or sight impaired students who have graduated from the adjacent high school. The units are designed to be residential in scale and function to aid the students in learning life skills. Architecturally the units use the same materials and forms found on the Mediterranean style buildings throughout the campus including white stucco walls with brick watertable base, exposed scroll cut rafter tails and a Spanish “S” tile roof. Each unit contains six bedrooms with three shared bathrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, and covered porches. The initial four units are placed around an interconnected courtyard to encourage interaction between the students.
